Tiivistelmä
The energy landscape is changing as more and more renewable energy sources are added to the grid worldwide. The increase of renewables results in a change in the operation of thermal power plants due to the intermittency of the added energy sources. As the number of starts increases, so does the awareness of the emissions during startups of internal combustion engine power plants. Because the equipment used for reducing emissions is dependent on the temperature in the exhaust gas system, the time it takes for the system to reach high enough temperature will determine the startup emissions.
The goal of the work is to develop a theoretical model in the simulation tool MATLAB describing the dynamics of the heating and cooling process of an exhaust gas system equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for the current Wärtsilä spark-ignited gas engine portfolio. The theoretical concept is built using expressions found in the literature are then adjusted with the help variables to describe the dynamics of real measurements.
The product of the work fulfills the set requirements, and the tool can be used for evaluating the effects of different exhaust gas system layouts and selection of, e.g., catalyst material for all engines included in the scope on system level or component level. Some uncertainties remain, but the implemented mechanisms seem to be reasonable interpretations of the complex phenomena occurring in the system.
