Tiivistelmä
Finland has traditionally been a country of emigration. During the past one hundred years over 1,4 million people have moved to other countries. In Finnish history one can separate several different eras of extremely large migration. The first era was in the 16th and 17th centuries, when Finns settled down in the uninhabited backwoods in the middle parts of Sweden. The most important wave of emigration took part from the 1860’s and went on to the 1930’s, when emigrants headed mainly for North America. The next wave of same dimension was the emigration to Sweden which started in the 1950’s and diminished in the 1970’s.
