Tiivistelmä
Sexual compliance, defined as engaging in a sexual activity despite a lack of initial desire, is common in intimate relationships. Previous research indicates that individuals can perceive both negative and positive consequences of sexual compliance on well-being. However, factors associated with individuals' perceptions of the consequences of sexual compliance remain relatively unexplored. Therefore, the present study examined the association between sexual motives (i.e., approach and avoidance), tendencies towards sexual communal strength and self-sacrifice, and the perceived consequences of sexual compliance in a Finnish population-based sample. The sample consisted of 953 participants who were in at least one casual or committed intimate relationship and had complied sexually at least once in the current relationship. Data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests, Pearson’s two-way correlations, and multiple linear regression analyses with interaction terms. More approach motives and greater tendencies for sexual communal strength were associated with more perceived positive consequences. Conversely, more avoidance motives and greater tendencies for self-sacrifice were associated with more perceived negative consequences. The interaction effects between gender and avoidance motives were significant. Specifically, as avoidance motives increased, women tended to perceive fewer positive consequences and more negative consequences, whereas the effects were less pronounced for men. These findings are clinically relevant, highlighting factors that may put individuals at risk for experiencing negative outcomes of sexual compliance. Future research should examine these associations further with population-based samples in other cultural contexts and with longitudinal studies to enhance the generalizability of the findings.
