Tiivistelmä
In the summer of 2021, vegetation data was analyzed and visualized to locate suitable new locations for monitoring. The data was collected between the years 2004 and 2020, using diving transects, around the Åland Islands. The aim of the project was to propose points in exposed areas in the archipelago of the Åland Islands that could complement the current macrophyte monitoring program and provide a more comprehensive and coherent overview of the ecological status of the coastal waters of the Åland Islands.
A list of criteria was used to find new possible monitoring points and to determine the suitability of the site. The criteria used were the mean occurrence of indicator species, a total depth of at least ten meters of the dive transect, whether the site was within a Natura2000 protected area and if the site had a hard or sandy bottom substrate. Furthermore, the depth distribution and coverage of bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) and the three red algae indicator species (Coccotylus/Phyllophora, Furcellaria lumbricalis and Rhodomela confervoides) were part of the criteria for sites with hard bottom substrate, while the depth distribution and coverage of eelgrass (Zostera marina) was a part of the criteria for sites with sandy bottom substrate.
A total of 14 sites were suggested in the project. Eleven of the suggestions, were for sites with hard bottom substrate and three suggestions were sites with sandy bottom substrate. The suggestions were relatively evenly distributed in the outer archipelago of the Åland Islands, except for two areas in the outer archipelago where no suitable locations were found.
