The purpose of the master’s thesis is to describe patients’ perceived trust in nurses with
restricted rights to prescribe medicines within basic health care in Ostrobothnia. The collected data is based on 27 telephone interviews with voluntary respondents, who have come to the nurses’ practice. The result was obtained by having the patients answer semi-structured questions in accordance with the interview guide at the research questions: How do patients’ experience the visit to the nurse with restricted rights to prescribe medicines? What factors do the patients consider important in order for the trust to be obtained in the caring relationship? The study builds upon a qualitative method since the patient’s experiences of a visit at the practice are to be interpreted. The data analysis of the material was conducted through a qualitative content analysis as the result needs to be read, structured and described. The approach is inductive while a pattern was searched for in order to elicit the significant elements in the patients’ opinions and experiences of the restricted.
The result shows that knowledge, accuracy and reliability at clinical assessment and counselling give a sense of safety, security and positivity. According to the patients it is purposeful to get acknowledgement and acceptance as well as affirmation in a caring relationship. According to the patients the nurses were sensitive in the discussions and good communication was pivotal for confidence in a caring relationship. According to the patients, listening implied that they felt valuable, accepted and affirmed during the visit at the practice because they got enough time and support. A dignified treatment with respect, joy and responsiveness promotes trust and induces a feeling that the nurse really cares about them. It is through the nurse’s warm, professional and safe hands and through a person-centered, acknowledging and empathetic attitude that the care becomes trustworthy and credible.
