Tiivistelmä
Juho Lemström examines Finnish conscripts’ attitudes towards military profession and Finnish Defence Forces as an employer from the point of view of personal value systems. Further, he examines what has affected these attitudes. The study is based on the author’s Masters’ Thesis. Lemström found that attitudes towards military profession varied as a function several factors, for example some value types were more closely related to subsequent opinions. In sum, conscripts had quite neutral attitudes towards military profession and FDF as a potential employer, and it is postulated that these attitudes can be affected by enhanced visibility of FDF in educational career and media prior to national service.
Sanna Kailaheimo and Laura Häyhä examined how Finnish military cadets construct their professional identities as implicated in personal essays. They state that cadets’ responses were quite homogenous, and that six different discourses related to identity construction could be extracted: (1) collective vs. individualistic discourse, (2) tradition and historicity, (3) values, (4) officers’ duties and roles, (5) calling vs. occupation, and (6) societal pressure and change. What is more, the authors contemplate that officers’ profession is has gradually changed with the society as a whole, but that it still includes basic duties related to the national defense.
Sini Kouri examines female officers’ motives to apply to international crisis management missions, the impact female participation has on operations and the implementation of gender dimension to training and operational conduct. Kouri writes that most important impacts female participation has brought forth are contacts to female population in areas of operation, and the function of exemplifying equality. On the other hand, it is discussed that overtly emphasizing of gender issues may have disadvantages. The author also discusses critical implications of results: it is plausible that the gender view is not optimally implemented in on-the-job training, or operational planning and reporting. The study is based on Kouri’s general staff officers’ thesis.
