Higher Things in Life : Artists' Information Seeking of the Aesthetic
Haavisto, Janne
Information needs of practicing artists have been widely neglected in information behaviour studies. Arts and literature, which are considered among the higher things in life in the aesthetic domain, is a context of information-seeking behaviour that requires more qualitative, empirical research in abundance in order to bring the higher and lower contexts of information phenomena into a holistic balance in the field of information science. Now more than ever before, as artificial intelligence is taking over the more mundane tasks in the lower contexts, increased attention should be given to the higher sphere, enabling human beings to not only survive, but to thrive with information. The current master’s thesis explores artists’ information-seeking behaviour – the information needs, forms of seeking, as well as the uses and outcomes of information – in the aesthetic domain from their subjective, phenomenological perspective. Special attention is paid to the positive perspective and the affective dimension in information seeking. The aim of the study is to unearth novel insights for the purpose of supporting the fulfilment of human self-actualisation needs and creative endeavours.
The underlying philosophy of research was interpretivism, characterised by a phenomenological approach. Qualitative research methods were employed in the study, the idiographic nature of which provided individual, unique, and practical perspectives to the information phenomena under investigation by way of relatively in-depth semi-structured interviews. The inductive reasoning in the interpretation of the interviews via the method of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis allowed for novel insights to emerge from the collected data.
The findings suggest that leisure-time information seeking of arts and literature is integral to the lived experience of artists and, thus, connected to their self-care and creative work especially in terms of synthesising aesthetic experiences. It is of such significance to the artists that it could be called a form of serious leisure. Arts and literature are perceived as potentially pleasurable and profound, indicating the higher nature of the information phenomena, although the height is dependent on the context and state of being of the experiencer. The information needs of artists stem from more fundamental needs such as self-actualisation needs and aesthetic needs. These information needs are extremely varied, characterised most often by a positive interest, and motivated by both cognitive and affective factors. The informational value of aesthetics is bolstered by the findings. It is concluded that many of the novel insights discussed warrant further study in the field, especially with a positive perspective and in the affective dimension for the benefit of practicing artists.

E-Health information seeking behavior of older Finnish adults from the value-based care point of view
Ahmadinia, Hamed
Health information seeking behavior is a widely discussed topic in the field of information studies. However, the current study is about observing and evaluating the efficiency of health information seeking behavior through E-Health service and devices. The main reason that motivated the researcher to carry out the current research was high cost of healthcare services in Finland. It is expected that health information obtained through electronic or online sources would help people to improve their health conditions. Therefore, this thesis is an empirical study on observing E-Health information seeking behavior and evaluating the efficiency of E-Health service and devices. In order to estimate the efficiency of E-Health service and products, this study considered some criteria generated by previous studies. These criteria were employed in the current study as indicators of the health information seeking efficiency.
The current study developed a customized model of health information seeking behavior based on the general model of information seeking behavior. The model contains some further criteria to measure the efficiency of the information seeking process. The primary tool to collect data were a multiple-choice questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed through two main methods, namely hard copy and online. The participants in this study were either Finnish older adults who were over 50 years old, or other persons who were responsible for providing health information for them.
The results of this study show that using E-Health service and products has neither a positive effect on improving the health condition of patients, nor does it motivate people to a healthier lifestyle, or make them feel more satisfied. However, it is expected that the results provide a framework for further studies to develop more efficient E-Health-related tools and services.

Abstract readability and online attention - an altmetric study of research articles with Finnish affiliations
Fagerlund, Sara
Scholarly communication is developing due to social media, and research funders increasingly demand that researchers provide proof of the social impact of research. Therefore, researchers must produce articles that attract the attention of readers. The abstract can be the determining factor if research is cited or shared online. Therefore, it is beneficial to understand how readable the abstracts are and what effect readability has on online attention. Academic texts are difficult to understand, and concerns have arisen regarding accessibility. The common readability formulas, such as the Flesch reading ease, are often used to assess text difficulty, and research has mainly focused on readability and scientific impact. This study maps the readability of abstracts using new readability assessment tools and investigates the relationship between abstract readability and online attention. Lexical and syntactic complexity tools evaluated the readability of the abstracts and Altmetric attention scores were used to assess the level of online attention the research articles received. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to analyse the relationship between readability and online attention. The data consisted of research article abstracts from15 research areas with affiliations to Finnish universities published in 2018. The dataset for the readability analysis consisted of 9272 abstracts. From this data, 5604 articles with at least one attention score were selected for the correlation analysis. The readability analysis showed that all research areas use similarly complex language, and research areas with higher lexical complexity generally score lower in syntactic complexity and vice versa. The implication is that the studied abstracts would be too difficult to read for general audiences. The results from the correlation analysis indicate that readability has a small impact on online attention. Depending on the research area and complexity index, the effect was either positive or negative, which provides inconclusive results regarding the influence of readability on online attention. More research is needed on readability and its effect on online attention.
